Fun Fact:  The Saguaro Cactus

You are in a very unique place.  You may be tempted to say that this area is home to Wile E. Coyote and The Roadrunner and, well, you’d be right.  How do we know?  Because in every episode of the show, there is at least one Saguaro Cactus making an appearance.

The Saguaro Cactus, pronounced sah-wháh-roh, genus Carnegiea Gigantea, is found exclusively in the Sonoran Desert and, more specifically, in greatest abundance around Tucson.  This plant does not show up natively anywhere else in the world, even though there are successful transplants.

There are two amazing places nearby where you can see these massive varieties up close.  The first is the Saguaro National Park, part of the United States National Park System, and the other is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.  And you’ll see thousands of them dotting the landscape in and around Sahuarita and Green Valley.

A drive South from the RV Resort down Abrego Drive will have you in awe at the Saguaro cacti growing in the median of the boulevard.

It’s not known exactly why these guardians of the desert grow only in this place, but it is likely related to the climate, the environment, and the ecosystem of other plants, mammals and birds.  And every Saguaro from 1.5 inches tall to the 40-foot behemoths are vigorously protected by law from removal or intentional damage.  Their bite is pretty nasty, too.

And if you’re looking for The Roadrunner, he’s here and in great abundance.  Sitting outside on a warm spring day, you will see many of them running around the park looking for lizards and other small critters.  They are curious, so don’t worry if they walk right up to you.  They’ve been known to roll their eyes at visitors that go “beep-beep” at them, too.

Media/TV Suggestions

Technology can outpace us and provide new, better alternatives.  Such is the case with TV media.  Historically, people signed up for cable and got whatever channels were available.  GVRV was originally wired for cable at every lot.  However, it became cost-prohibitive to provide the equipment and the management / troubleshooting necessary for cable TV and Internet.  We do not provide cable TV service at individual lots.

If you are an annual or permanent resident, it may make sense for you to establish COX Cable service for your cable and Wi-Fi needs; the front office can give you details.  However, nowadays and especially in the RV community at large, there are better, less expensive options to, at a minimum, acquire a Wi-Fi signal.  Some residents even use the hotspot on their phone for all their internet needs.

Once you have an internet/Wi-Fi signal in your rig, the world is your media oyster.  You can connect a streaming device such as ROKU and get access to hundreds of streaming channels AND local TV stations.  Of course, with a smart TV, many streaming options are already built in.

If you have no internet service, but you do have an HD antenna on your rig, you’re in luck.  There are about 12 HDTV signals that you can receive right here.  For a list of all these channels, go the FCC DTV Reception Maps and enter our zipcode here of 85614.

For detailed and current information on ways to get TV and internet service, check out our Media Options document below.

Propane

You can look around to find propane in the area and, if you’re only staying for a few days or weeks, that will probably suit you just fine.  If you’re staying longer, you will likely be looking for the best price or convenience, if you don’t want to lug your tanks around.

Most residents in the resort use Arizona Propane as their gas provider.  If you are interested in having your tanks filled right on your rig, they will do that.  If you are interested in the lowest possible price, and you’re able to take your tanks to them, then that’s the way to go.

In-resort deliveries are made on Tuesday, so you can call to get on the next Tuesday’s delivery list.  There is a $5 up-charge for delivery, and the per-gallon price is higher than if you take your tanks to them for filling.

Regardless of how you go, you should contact them by phone or in-person and set up an account so that your transactions are handled automatically.  For more information, call 520-750-9116 or visit the Tucson location at 4481 E. Kentucky St., Tucson AZ, 85714CLICK HERE for a map to their location that you can download to your phone.

They are able to fill all sizes of propane cylinders, from gas grill size (20 pound), to standard camper size (30 pound), to larger camper size (40 pound), to non-portable horizontal and vertical tanks.

Area Attractions

There are many things to see and do in the Green Valley area.  Here are a few of the main attractions that will get you started; click on an item in the list for a full Google search.  Also, talk to your neighbors once you’re here and find out from them what they recommend.

I-19 Corridor

Access to Attractions

And the Only Metric-Signed Highway in the United States

Most of the attractions we mention here are accessible within the U.S. Interstate 19 corridor.  One end of I-19 is located in Tucson where it intersects I-10, and the other end is located in the City of Nogales, Arizona at the U.S.-Mexico border.

At 63 miles in length, I-19 is the seventh-shortest primary (two-digit) Interstate Highway in the contiguous 48 states.  The highway was envisioned in the early 1960’s, and the first segment was constructed from I-10 in Tucson South to Valencia Road.

You may be confused by the exit signs and mileposts that are presented in the metric system of measurement, also called SI units.  The Metric Conversion Act of 1975 created a push for the United States to transition to the metric system, and the U.S. Metric Board decided to use I-19 as a pilot project for the U.S. Interstate System.  When efforts to move to metric fizzled out in the U.S., the impetus to migrate interstate signage to SI units fizzled out right along with it.

Over the years, the state has attempted to replace some of those metric signs with standard U.S. signage, but has met with much opposition by businesses in the corridor that have used the metric signage as part of their advertising.  Currently, there is nothing in the works to change that.

As it stands, U.S. Interstate 19 remains the only U.S. Highway with exclusively metric signage.  Fortunately, the speed limit signs are in MPH.
